The Borough Council has appointed Class I Special Officers for 2018. Seven new officers were appointed at the March 28th meeting of the Borough Council. These officers will begin their training at the Monmouth County Police Academy on April 30th. Once this training is completed, they are set to begin a field training program within the Sea Girt Police Department.
Also appointed at this Council meeting was Randolf Maccanico, who will join our agency in June upon the completion of his training at the Academy of Law & Public Safety in Long Branch, NJ. The Academy of Law & Public Safety is a full-time program of the Monmouth County Vocational School District. The program is designed to prepare high school students for careers in criminal justice. This two-year, high school program includes the usual high school coursework such as math, science, English, history and physical education. There are three law enforcement teachers on hand who provide the additional coursework to prepare students for their criminal justice career. Students from the Academy of Law & Public Safety may be selected by their teachers to participate in police academy-based training in their senior year which will provide them certification as a Class I Special Officer. Officer Maccanico displayed the necessary qualities which allowed him to be selected by the staff at the Academy of Law and Public Safety to be selected for certification as a Class I Special Officer.
Last month, the Borough Council appointed Ofc. Courtney Pearce. Ofc. Pearce has started her field training and previously graduated from the Ocean County Law & Public Safety Academy in June 2017.
All officers of the Sea Girt Police Department are subject to a competitive application process. This process includes an inspection of resumès and general applications followed by an interview conducted by an interview panel. Candidates selected by this panel must then pass a comprehensive and thorough background investigation.
